Looking for a place in Europe where you can work hard – and play hard too? There are a ton of European hotspots for digital nomads nowadays, but one getting a lot of attention right now is Munich.

It should come as no surprise that Munich is one of the most popular cities for tourists and digital nomads. After all, it placed 4th in the global Expat City Ranking 2021 for quality of urban living.

What else makes this city a must-visit European hotspot for digital nomads and freelancers? Here are the top three reasons:

1. Vibrant city

Munich is a city known for its culture, traditions, and beer. In 2019, there were more than 9 million visitors to Munich and even despite Coronavirus, in 2021, it was reported that more than 3 million people visited the city (860,000 from abroad and more than 4 million foreign tourists in 2019). There were almost 8 million overnight stays! These figures, of course, would have been even higher had it not been for the global health crisis.

While it may only be the 3rd largest city in Germany, it still has a population of over 1,5 million people. And, unlike other big cities, Munich is easy to navigate. The city has high-quality public transportation services and is very well suited for cycling enthusiasts.

Munich is frequently praised as one of the best European regions to live in. In fact, it was listed as the 2nd best place to visit in Germany, pipped only by the capital, Berlin. This city offers a fantastic work-life balance with its wide array of festivals (including Oktoberfest), coworking spaces, and tourist spots.

If you plan to visit, it’s recommended to do so between March to May. This is because it’s relatively more quiet compared to other months and with summer season just about to kick in. But, if you want to experience what Munich’s party scene has to offer, you should visit around September to November. Of course, all year round there are incredible things to see and do in this historic city.

2. Amazing coworking cafes

If you’re a freelancer or digital nomad, you’re naturally going to need a place to work while you travel. As one of the European hotspots for digital nomads, Munich boasts some of the best coworking spaces around. Once you visit Munich, it won’t be hard to find a coworking space.

But if you want to skip any inconvenience and work somewhere that also provides great food, you should visit the Focus Lounge by King’s.

The centrally-located space has everything a digital nomad could dream of. It offers the following amenities and services:

    • Conference rooms good for up to 8 people
    • Event venues that can fit 40 seated and 80 standing
    • High-speed internet connection
    • Flexible membership plans
    • Laptop care (if you fancy taking a screen break)
    • Networking events
    • Healthy and delicious meals good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

3. Low crime rates

Aside from unforgettable sightseeing and having a comfortable place to settle down and do some work, this is also a very safe city. While crime is a reality in every city, it just doesn’t happen that much in Munich compared to many other European centers.

In fact, it’s so safe that you won’t have to worry even if you’re out walking in the city late at night. That’s a big deal!

According to Numbeo, as of this writing, on a scale of 1 to 100: Munich has a tremendously reassuring crime index of just 18.60 (designated as ‘very low’); and a correspondingly impressive safety index of 81.40 (‘very high’). By contrast, the city of London, UK, has a considerably higher crime index of 53.33 and a resulting safety index of just 46.67.

Final thoughts

Munich is the perfect choice if you want to visit a European city where you can enjoy yourself while still being productive for work.

When you visit Munich, it won’t even feel like you’re a ‘foreigner’. The place is hugely popular with tourists and has a very diverse resident population – tolerance and harmony are important watchwords here!

The location is quite unlike any other in Europe. It’s a big yet safe city with affordable accommodation, a vibrant nightlife, multiple tourist attractions, and of course, excellent coworking spaces. You really can’t go wrong making marvelous Munich a regular destination on your work-and-play travels!
